2026-10-14
Dear Nunavimmiut,
Makivvik wishes to inform the public that there will be no modification of Nunavik’s current time standard occurring in the current year, 2026.
As a result of this, Nunavik will proceed in accordance with the rest of the Province of Quebec, which will move its clocks backward one-hour on the 1st of November 2026, in observance of Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5) and subsequently advance forward on the 14th of March 2027 when daylight savings returns to effect.
Unfortunately, implementing all requirements necessary to officially modify Nunavik’s time standard in 2026 could not be completed within the expected timeframe. Technical and administrative challenges relating to the satisfactory compliance of global timekeeping regulators prevented our team from implementing the modifications in a sufficiently coordinated and seamless manner. Proceeding without these preparations could have subjected the region to significant potential logistical challenges.
As of date, our team is actively targeting a November 2027 implementation for the cessation of seasonal time changes. We wish to inform you that all future changes to Nunavik’s time keeping standards will be expressly communicated with the public in advance, providing an opportunity for community members and organizations to express their concerns, as well as to prepare accordingly.
Advancements continue to be pursued and evaluated with respect to the future of Nunavik’s time standard, including legal, operational, and practical considerations to ensure a smooth eventual transition away from twice-yearly clock changes. However, we can confirm that no change will be taking effect in 2026.
Thank you for your attention in this matter,
Sincerely,
Makivvik
