Makivvik and Kativik Regional Government sign agreements supporting Nunavik Inuit and regional development
Montréal, Québec, August 27, 2026 – Makivvik and the Kativik Regional Government (KRG), together with the Government of Québec, have signed two agreements addressing immediate pressures on Nunavik Inuit, and supporting the continued social and economic development of the region.
The agreements provide $155 million over six years for Nunavik’s Cost-of-Living Reduction Program and extend the Sanarrutik Agreement for two years. Together, they maintain essential support for Nunavik Inuit, protect the continuity of regional programs and provide a basis for negotiating a sustainable long-term funding framework.
The renewed cost-of-living agreement responds to one of the most pressing realities facing Nunavik Inuit. The high cost of food, fuel, household goods, air travel, and harvesting equipment places considerable pressure on individuals and families throughout the region.
The two-year extension of Sanarrutik will ensure the continuation of funding, programs and initiatives that have supported Nunavik for more than two decades. Signed in 2002, Sanarrutik established a partnership among Makivvik, the KRG, and the Government of Québec to advance the economic and community development of the region.
The extension will allow existing initiatives to continue while the parties work toward a renewed agreement that reflects Nunavik’s current and emerging priorities. Discussions will focus on establishing a viable, predictable, and long-term framework that gives regional organizations the capacity to respond effectively to community needs.
