MONTREAL, QC — (October 13, 2017) — Media are invited to a press conference for the signing of an historic agreement between the seven Indigenous Nations that make up UPCART – the Ungava Peninsula Caribou Aboriginal Round Table. Indigenous leaders from all nations will be at the press conference.
The Agreement is to implement a Management Strategy for caribou in the George River and Leaf River herds, which inhabit the Ungava Peninsula, a vast area stretching over 1.5 million square kilometers.
Ungava Peninsula Caribou populations have been in steep declines since the 1990s. The George River Herd dropped from a peak of 770,000 to 9,000 at present. The Leaf River Herd has dropped from 628,000 in 2001 to 199,000 in 2016.
The Management Strategy titled, “A Long Time Ago in the Future: Caribou and the People of Ungava”, is the product of four years of unprecedented meetings between the seven nations.
The Ungava Peninsula Caribou Aboriginal Round Table membership is composed of: the Inuit of Nunavik (represented by Makivvik), the Inuit of Nunatsiavut (represented by the Nunatsiavut Government), the NunatuKavut Community Council, the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach, the Grand Council of the Crees of Eeyou Istchee/Cree Regional Authority (GCCEI/CRA), the Innu Nation of Labrador, and all the Innu communities from the Quebec region.
