Wildlife Techinician
Job Description:
Reports to: Nunavik Research Centre Manager in the Department of Environment, Wildlife and Research
Responsibilities:
- Assisting in planning, coordinating & implementing research programs and fieldwork; tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Shipping, receiving, processing of and reporting on wildlife kits and samples at the Nunavik Research Centre;
- Preparing materials and supplies for wildlife research projects (i.e., sampling tools, camping and safety equipment, etc.);
- Environmental monitoring (collection and preparation of water, soil, air samples);
- Trapping and/or harvesting of wildlife species and fish for sampling;
- Ageing of salmon scales, char otoliths and beluga teeth;
- Testing walrus and seal samples for Trichinella;
- Data entry and analysis;
- Be available to travel, as requested;
- Be available for field work, as requested;
- Perform other related duties within the scope of the position or as requested by supervisor.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma;
- Relevant experience is an asset;
- Some environmental monitoring training;
- Strong on-the-land skills, knowledge of fish and wildlife;
- Effective Computer skills: Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.);
- Must be comfortable working in both laboratory, office, and field environments;
- Must be willing and able to understand concepts related to wildlife and environmental monitoring, wildlife disease and health;
- Must be fluent in Inuktitut and competent in English;
- Some knowledge of French is an asset;
- Knowledge of project proposal, funding applications, report writing, program evaluations and strong organizational skills;
- Strong work ethic and positive team attitude;
- Good integrity, autonomy, punctuality and accountability;
- Valid driver’s license (provincial or territorial);
- Familiarity with firearms;
- Comfort driving and travelling in boats, ATV’s, helicopters, and small airplanes;
- Security clearance is required.
