Wildlife Techinician

Job Description:

Reports to:    Nunavik Research Centre Manager in the Department of Environment, Wildlife and Research

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in planning, coordinating & implementing research programs and fieldwork; tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Shipping, receiving, processing of and reporting on wildlife kits and samples at the Nunavik Research Centre;
  • Preparing materials and supplies for wildlife research projects (i.e., sampling tools, camping and safety equipment, etc.);
  • Environmental monitoring (collection and preparation of water, soil, air samples);
  • Trapping and/or harvesting of wildlife species and fish for sampling;
  • Ageing of salmon scales, char otoliths and beluga teeth;
  • Testing walrus and seal samples for Trichinella;
  • Data entry and analysis;
  • Be available to travel, as requested;
  • Be available for field work, as requested;
  • Perform other related duties within the scope of the position or as requested by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma;
  • Relevant experience is an asset;
  • Some environmental monitoring training;
  • Strong on-the-land skills, knowledge of fish and wildlife;
  • Effective Computer skills: Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.);
  • Must be comfortable working in both laboratory, office, and field environments;
  • Must be willing and able to understand concepts related to wildlife and environmental monitoring, wildlife disease and health;
  • Must be fluent in Inuktitut and competent in English;
  • Some knowledge of French is an asset;
  • Knowledge of project proposal, funding applications, report writing, program evaluations and strong organizational skills;
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude;
  • Good integrity, autonomy, punctuality and accountability;
  • Valid driver’s license (provincial or territorial);
  • Familiarity with firearms;
  • Comfort driving and travelling in boats, ATV’s, helicopters, and small airplanes;
  • Security clearance is required.
