Summer Student Employment – Research Assistant

Job Description:

Reports to:    Nunavik Research Staff

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of NRC staff, the selected candidate will:

 

  • Conduct laboratory work (necropsies, biological sampling, molecular biology, contaminant analysis, etc.);
  • Perform physically demanding field work (carrying heavy equipment, collecting biological samples, stay for a period at a camp outside of Kuujjuaq);
  • Learn scientific monitoring and fishing techniques (e.g., net setting, fish handling, biological sampling/dissection);
  • Record and input field and laboratory data accurately, maintain organized notes;
  • Help with office work as required by NRC staff (printing, scanning, preparing sampling kits, etc.);
  • Possibility for the student to follow NRC staff to the international ArcticNet conference Halifax on December 7-10.
  • Be available to travel, as requested;
  • Perform other related duties within the scope of the position or as requested by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • JBNQA Beneficiary;
  • Secondary III to V Diploma, college student or university student an asset;
  • Effective communication skills in at least two (2) of the three (3) languages: Inuktitut, English and/or French;
  • Effective Computer skills : Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.);
  • High interest in science and research;
  • Reliable, autonomous and highly motivated.
  • Security clearance is required.
