Job Description:

ABOUT US: The Makivvik Justice Department helps administer justice using culturally adapted approaches which focus primarily on healing individuals, families, and the community, while also dealing with the underlying causes of crime.  Para-judicial workers, local justice committees, correctional liaison agents and Gladue writers offer direct services to Nunavimmiut at various stages of the justice and correctional process. The Justice Department consists of six (6) separate programs all relating to alternative justice initiatives in Nunavik, which includes Justice Committees, Para-Judicial Workers, Corrections Program, Gladue Reports, Record Suspension Program and Qullik Healthy Relationships.

Para-Judicial Workers (PJW) play a very important role in providing support, guidance and referrals to legal resources, to all Nunavimmiut involved in Youth Protection interventions and the Itinerant Criminal Court.

We are currently seeking a PARA-JUDICIAL WORKER who will report to the Para-Judicial Program Manager of the Justice Department.

 The PARA-JUDICIAL WORKER aims to:

  • Work in close collaboration with the itinerant Court to allow for a smooth exchange of information between clients and lawyers.

We strongly encourage Inuit beneficiaries to apply to this position. Extensive training and continuous support will be provided to employees that don’t have previous work experience in the justice system. Inuit and cultural knowledge in general will be valued.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the contact between Inuit being involved in the justice system and a lawyer;
  • Inform all Inuit accused of their rights and duties regarding court procedures and the justice system with the support of the Para-Judicial Program Coordinator;
  • Prepare and draft short release plans in collaboration with a lawyer and Para-Judicial Program Coordinator;
  • Sensibilize and inform all members of the community in regard to the justice system;
  • Promote Inuit traditions and ways of life to the court members and inform them about any particulars of an accused or any event in the community that might impact the court week;
  • Perform all other administrative duties under their mandate indicated by the Para-Judicial Program Coordinator or their representative in the best interest of the program.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Nunavik realities and issues;
  • Strong desire to support and assist your fellow Inuit in access to justice and having their rights respected;
  • Ability to listen and communicate;
  • Education: Secondary 5 completed;
  • Languages: Inuktitut and English ;
  • Minimal knowledge of the social, judicial or correctional field but additional training will be provided;
  • English writing skills;
  • Computer skills; word, internet, excel, etc;
  • Capacities to work in a team setting;
  • Organizational skills;
  • Be reliable and autonomous;
  • Be respectful (confidentiality and non-judgmental);
  • Be available to travel for trainings, meetings, and with the travelling court upon request.
