At Makivvik’s 2026 Annual General Meeting in Salluit, four Nunavimmiut were recognized with the Nunavik Bravery Award for risking their own safety to help others in life-threatening situations.

This year’s recipients were honoured for three separate rescue efforts that took place in 2024 and 2025.

John-Louie Iqiquq and Peter Boy Ittukallak received the award for rescuing Ryan Beaulne and Naina Aupaluk Jodoin after their skidoo broke through the ice on a river in Puvirnituq in December 2024.

Ryan and Naina managed to climb onto their floating qamutik after falling into the freezing water but were unable to get out on their own. They called for help until John-Louie and Peter Boy heard them. The two men quickly got a small boat and travelled onto the river to reach them. Their actions brought Ryan and Naina safely back to shore, and they were also able to recover the skidoo.

Samisa Arnamissa, who was 13 years old at the time, was recognized for rescuing Jason Echalook after the ice gave way during a skidoo trip near Inukjuak last spring. Although Samisa was able to stay safe, Jason became trapped in the water and could not get out. Samisa found a wooden stick and used it to pull Jason to safety. The selection committee recognized Samisa’s willingness to act quickly in a dangerous situation despite his young age.

Eva Morgan received the Nunavik Bravery Award for rescuing Jessie Angnatuk after she fell through the ice in Kangiqsualujjuaq last spring. Jessie was unable to climb out of the water after the ice broke beneath her. Eva, who uses a cane because of mobility issues, approached the unstable ice and used her cane to help Jessie reach safety.
Despite the danger to herself, Eva chose to help. Her actions saved Jessie’s life.

The Nunavik Bravery Award is open to nominations from anyone in Nunavik. Acts of bravery by JBNQA beneficiaries must have taken place within the previous three years to be eligible. All nominations are kept confidential.
