Justice Committee Coordinator – Umiujaq (JUS09162022)
The Makivvik Justice Department helps administer justice using culturally adapted approaches which put the emphasis on healing individuals, families and the community while also dealing with the underlying causes of crimes. In Nunavik, para-judicial workers and local justice committees offer direct services to the population at various stages of the justice and correctional process in collaboration, and with the support of the regional Justice Department office. Makivvik aims to encourage Inuit to be involved in the justice system and work toward self determination. The Justice Committee guides and supports Inuit that are involved in different stages of the judicial or correctional process based on Inuit values :
•To address the underlying issues of their crime.
•To understand and take responsibility for their behaviours.
•To engage in a healing process aimed at repairing harm to the victim and/orrestore harmony in the community.
•To connect with their community and culture in a meaningful way.
We are currently seeking a JUSTICE COMMITTEE COORDINATOR who will report to the Justice Committee Program Coordinator.
We strongly encourage Inuit beneficiaries to apply to this position. Extensive training and continuous support will be provided to employees that don’t have previous work experience in the justice system. Experience with Inuit and cultural knowledge in general will be valued.
•Bringing forward culturally based processes of restoring harmony in thecommunity based on Inuit legal traditions;
•Act as a resource person on Inuit traditions and culture in matters related to courtofficials and within the justice system in general when requested by the JusticeCommittee Program Coordinator;
•Meeting with people referred to the Justice Committee Program and providingculturally relevant support when needed;
•Case Management : receiving referrals of Inuit from the community from thecourt and managing their file until completion;
•Administrative duties : entering statistics, answering telephone and emails,ensure office has sufficient supplies by communicating with regional office,completing any necessary forms required by supervisor or partners;
•Plan and organize “on the land” or other traditional activities for clients with yourparticipation and committees’s members;
•Plan and organize & facilitating cultural programs for clients with yourparticipation and committee’s members
•Offer mediation or conflict resolution between client and affected persons andsupport them in their healing path or restoring harmony process
Knowledge and understanding of Inuit culture and local traditions;
Knowledge of Nunavik realities and issues;
Strong desire to support and assist your fellow Inuit in going through their healingjourney;
Experience with intervention with youth or adults is an asset but additional trainingwill be provided;
Ability to listen and communicate;
Strong organizational skills and an eye for detail;
Reliable and autonomous;
Respectful, non-judgemental, discrete;
Available to travel for trainings, meetings, and with the travelling court uponrequest;
Education : Secondary 5 completed or relevant experience in social or judicial field;
Languages: Inuktitut and English;
Good English writing skills;
Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet;
Minimal knowledge of the social, judicial or correctional field but additionaltraining will be provided.
